Half of 2017 is already in the books and I may (or may not) have learned a few things about myself. Something that changed pretty significantly from most of last year is that I picked up a solo commute. The wife and I swap days that we have kid pickup and drop off duty and I spend about an hour in the car from home to work and vice versa.
I got quickly bored with music and ended up immersing myself back in to Podcasts. And because this is mostly a solo ride or with the kids rather than the previous joint commute, it’s been a lot of focus on things I want to listen to. This has then extended to my runs every other night and I’ve actually gone through a ton of content.
The other big thing that changed in my life is iRacing. I’m really, really crazy super addicted to motorsports and all things automotive. It’s the first thing I think of when I wake up and the last thing I think of when I go to bed. Nothing has changed in that respect, but my new found “career” in simracing has certainly inspired a lot more of the addiction.
My general growth mindset has meant listening to more driving tips and buying more books on driving in addition to the regularly scheduled late night coding sessions. If anything I’ve found myself in a little bit of a conundrum of the same mikka bouzu tendencies I was trying to battle this year… but they’re certainly a bit more focused.
Back at the beginning of June I had committed to:
- scheduling 2017 track days
- getting my iRacing Class D Road Racing license
- drawing more
- writing more
I give myself a C. I have track days on the calendar but not confirmed. I decided to pick up on an old project and spent a bunch of time re-learning React and Redux. I’ve jotted notes here and there about my beliefs, but I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about them and on the drawing front definitely dusted off the sketchbooks. And finally, I did get that Class D License. 🎉
Looking at my 2017 goals from the beginning of the year, they definitely shifted, but have the same general focus. I’m actually tracking a little better towards 2018 so we’re on the right general path.
Another month, another set of goals:
- read Speed Secrets: Professional Race Driving Techniques. it’s a 20 year old book, but it’s still extremely relevant.
- finish the Modern React with Redux course I’m taking
- set fewer goals and work towards finishing them
